A search and rescue operation carried by the Italian Navy and Guardia di Finanza during a daily patrol in the Mediterranean Sea. A craft carrying about one hundred people is spotted at around 120 miles south of the coast of Lampedusa, less than 20 miles from the Libyan port of Zwara. A Navy frigate transfers the migrants onto the Finanza patrol ship where the crew completes the transhipping and carries out the first health screening.
Ninety-two people, all from Ghana and Nigeria, sit on the piers of the military ship waiting to be taken ashore. This is the last part of their journey to Europe. After disembarking at Lampedusa’s small harbor the migrants are transferred to the island’s reception center.
